We are living in the most prosperous and unequal time in human history. Despite the abundance of wealth around the world, the vast majority of people are excluded from this prosperity.
In 2017, billionaires around the world increased in their wealth by $762 billion – an amount that could have ended extreme global poverty seven times over!
In Canada, the incomes of the bottom 90 percent in Canada increased by only 2 percent from 1982 and 2010, while those in the top 10 percent saw their incomes increase by 75 percent.
Those facing social marginalization are in turn excluded from economic and income-generating opportunities, making minorities and vulnerable populations more likely to live in poverty.
Reducing inequalities and sharing in our prosperity will create a happier, healthier and safer world for all.
