Investment Committee

Guiding EWB investment into innovative ventures within the Small and Growing Business portfolio.

To ensure we make the right investments and foster innovators that closely align with the EWB mission, we have formed an Investment Committee. The committee’s primary objective is to oversee and guide investments in, and additions to, the Small and Growing Business ventures portfolio. The Investment Committee ensures a robust approach to selection, monitoring, and value-add of companies of companies within the portfolio.

  • The Investment Committee

    Managing Director, Doreo Partners

    • Raised US$24 million to develop an integrated agricultural trading, production and processing business.
    • Led the corporate finance organizations of one of Nigeria’s leading agricultural conglomerates, raising US$130 million in equity and restructuring US$360 million in debt.
    • Holds an MBA (Honors) from Harvard.
    • Masters in Mechanical Engineering (Distinction) from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

    Kola Masha is the Managing Director of Doreo Partners, a Nigerian venture capital firm with a focus on impact investing within the agriculture sector. Kola brings significant leadership experience in venture capital, corporate finance, business development, marketing and operations. His experience spans four continents with multiple global companies, including GE and Abiomed.

    CEO, Zoona

    • Raised $8.5 million in investment for Zoona, including a $4 million Series A round.
    • Led growth from early-stage start-up to over 1.3 million consumers, 1,400 agent outlets, 8.5 million money transfers and 120 employees across multiple countries.
    • Holds an MBA with Distinction from Oxford University, where he was a Skoll Scholar for Social Entrepreneurship.
    • MSc in Management Development from the London School of Economics.

    Previously a Project Manager at Engineers Without Borders, Mike Quinn is now Group CEO of Zoona, an African FinTech business that helps communities thrive. In 2015, the Nike Foundation and Unreasonable Institute selected Zoona for the inaugural Girl Effect Accelerator as one of the top start-ups in the world, helping girls out of poverty based on a micro-finance model that empowers girls and young women to become entrepreneurs.

    Partner, Cycle Capital

    • Previous Director of Investments for the MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund (IAF), a $40 million venture capital fund established by the Ontario government to invest in seed and early stage technology oriented companies based in Ontario.
    • Participated in the creation of a $40m cross-border life sciences fund and the close of a Canadian-based $40mag-biotech fund.
    • Holds an ICD.d from the University of Toronto, an MBA from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Bachelor’s of Economics from the University of Waterloo.

    Based in Toronto, Shirley Speakman brings strong experience in investment recommendations and decisions, portfolio management, sourcing, and partnering. With a proven track record in investment advisory for the MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund, Shirley lends a wealth of insight sourced from over 12 years in advising biotech, ag-biotech and advanced manufacturing and materials companies in areas such as strategy, finance, negotiations and fund raising.

    • Previous Director of the Royal Bank of Scotland, with particular focus on Global Banking & Markets and Financial Structuring.
    • Holds a BA in PPE from Oxford University, a Graduate Diploma in Law from the College of Law, and an MA in International Development from Johns Hopkins SAIS.

    Sara draws on vast experience in investment into emerging markets and her current role with the CDC Group in London. The CDC’s Impact Fund seeks to back intermediaries that invest in scalable businesses to achieve positive impact on underserved populations in Sub-Saharan Africa and South East Asia. Prior to joining CDC, Sara was a Principal at Accion Frontier Investments, an equity fund investing in financial inclusion companies globally.

    CEO, Engineers Without Borders Canada

    • Joined EWB Canada’s Toronto-based executive team as Vice President of Strategy and Investment in 2011.
    • CEO since 2014, dedicated to bringing EWB’s impact model to a global scale.
    • Holds a PhD in engineering and a Graduate Diploma in Social Innovation.

    With experience working in Ghana and Burkina Faso, Boris Martin has been on a long-term quest to find effective ways to create fundamental and lasting positive social change. Prior to joining EWB’s executive team in 2011, Boris gathered experience supporting the adaptive capacity of large farming organizations and co-founded an indigenous foods distribution start-up. He brings comprehensive experience and strong passion to enact EWB’s mission for a thriving and sustainable world.
