Chapter Spotlight: How UofT EWB is Engineering Change in Toronto

With a new school year just around the corner, many of our 20+ EWB academic chapters across Canada have started their recruitment processes. Located at the heart of Ontario, our University of Toronto chapter is busy with recruitment, setting up projects, and preparing for xChange 2024!

Our third academic chapter to be highlighted in our series is the EWB University of Toronto Chapter. The chapter community is a vibrant one made of changemakers that are passionate about creating technological and sustainable solutions to address issues at the university, local, and global levels. Members of the EWB UofT chapter have been a part of Hill Day and this year, the chapter will be hosting Ontario xChange 2024!

For the upcoming school year, EWB University of Toronto’s chapter has been planning several impactful tech projects, focused on using engineering principles to solve problems within our local and global community.

  • The CGEN AQUALENS project will be creating an app to enable community members in Mexico to use a water quality assessment tool developed by the Centre for Global Engineering.
  • The Water Filtration project will be supporting a water filtration startup, in researching, designing, and prototyping large-scale water filters for Indigenous communities.
  • The 3D Printing Prosthetics project will be focused on improving 3D printed prosthetics for below the knee amputees, as well as fabricating prosthetics for arms.

Additionally, the chapter plans to design a watering system for Engineers Without Borders (EWB) to support our community garden at Hart House. Beyond these, they will be working on research projects related to walkable cities and campus food systems, to create meaningful change within the U of T community.

The EWB UofT chapter is also running our programs: Innomasters, EWBeyond, SCYLC, and Hack Without Borders, to empower high school and university students to become innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders.

With all of these projects and programs, the EWB UofT chapter hopes to educate members and community about the advantage of leveraging engineering and tech to better the world, and promote personal and professional development within the chapter.

As hosts of the Ontario regional event of xChange 2024, the EWB UofT chapter will focus on the current state of the renewable/clean energy infrastructure and growth, and assess how educational technology can improve engagement with climate education in a global setting. The event will feature expert panelists, break-out sessions, interactive displays and booths, and networking opportunities.

EWB Canada commends the EWB University of Toronto chapter for their work and is eager to see what innovations they will bring to their communities in the future by using technology to solve problems!
