Spotlight on Sasha Caldera: EWB volunteer to national campaign leader

After nearly a decade at EWB, Sasha joined the team at Canadians for Tax Fairness this past fall. Sasha was a part of EWB since 2008, taking on roles as a volunteer, professional fellow and, most recently, a staff member of the Policy and Advocacy team, where he led national campaigns and trained volunteers across the country. He now manages a multi-year lobbying and advocacy effort between Canadians For Tax Fairness, Publish What You Pay Canada, and Transparency International Canada.

“At EWB, I learned to build advocacy strategies, put things in action, move campaigns forward and tweak for next time. I learned to work on the fly with few resources and be versatile,” Sasha says.

In his current role, Sasha leverages his skills in government relations and campaign strategy to work with federal and provincial governments to address financial crime and terrorist financing by improving beneficial ownership transparency. Sasha leads a team of staff and volunteers from all three organizations and regularly meets with elected officials to advance this issue.

“Young Canadians bring vital dialogue to democracy and EWB is a huge part of that mass action. EWB shaped me and thousands of other young people into politically-engaged, high-capacity leaders.”
