A Message from the CEO

Happy New Year! It is with great excitement that I write my first ‘official’ communication as the new CEO of Engineers Without Borders Canada (EWB). Although I’ve been in this seat for less than two months, the EWB community has been very welcoming (and patient) while I settle into my new role. Some have compared this period of learning to ‘drinking from a fire hose’, and they’re not wrong. Each day brings new knowledge and understanding of not only the great organization that EWB is, but also its potential for growth.

For most of us, engineering and technological marvels are so woven into our daily lives that we hardly notice them, and may even take them for granted. For a large portion of the global population, access to and benefits from these marvels has been uneven and in some cases, intentionally blocked from reaching those who could benefit most. Throughout my career I’ve worked with communities, governments and projects in over 25 countries, and I’ve learned that technological ‘fixes’ often don’t work. There are so many other components (like cultural, behavioural and political systems) that need to fit into and integrate with the views and feedback of those closest to the issues on the ground. I think that many engineers, technologists and other tech-literates and allies aren’t mainly driven by profit and recognition, but rather by a belief that technology should benefit the greatest number of people, improve their lives in some clear way, and do so without compromising the planet’s life-support systems.

Over the next several months, EWB will be undergoing a reset in its ambitions and strategic direction; keeping what works and evaluating what could work better as we begin to focus more on the ‘engineering’ in our name, both pragmatically and overtly.

Thank you for your ongoing support and your belief in EWB. With your input, knowledge, experience, and support, we will continue to work towards the exchange, sharing and free-flow of technological and engineering practices and solutions to increase wellbeing for all.

Bonne année! C’est avec grand plaisir que j’écris ma première communication « officielle » en tant que nouveau PDG d’Ingénieurs sans frontières Canada (ISF). Bien que j’occupe ce poste depuis moins de deux mois, la communauté ISF a été très accueillante (et patiente) pendant que je m’installe dans mon nouveau rôle. Certains ont comparé cette période d’apprentissage à “boire d’un boyau à incendie”, et ils n’ont pas tort. Chaque jour apporte de nouvelles connaissances et une nouvelle compréhension non seulement de la grande organisation qu’est ISF, mais aussi de son potentiel de croissance.

Pour la plupart d’entre nous, les merveilles du monde de l’ingénierie et de la technologie sont tellement ancrées dans notre vie quotidienne que nous les remarquons à peine, et pouvons même les tenir pour acquises. Pour une grande partie de la population mondiale, l’accès à ces merveilles et leurs avantages a été et demeure inégal et, dans certains cas, intentionnellement bloqué à ceux qui pourraient en bénéficier le plus. Tout au long de ma carrière, j’ai travaillé avec des communautés, des gouvernements et sur des projets dans plus de 25 pays, et j’ai appris que les «solutions» technologiques ne fonctionnent souvent pas. Il y a tellement d’autres composantes (tels que les systèmes culturels, comportementaux et politiques) qui doivent s’insérer et s’intégrer aux points de vue et aux suggestions de ceux qui vivent quotidiennement les problèmes sur le terrain. Je crois que de nombreux ingénieurs, technologues et autres spécialistes de la technologie et alliés ne sont pas principalement motivés par le profit et la reconnaissance, mais plutôt par la conviction que la technologie devrait profiter au plus grand nombre de personnes, améliorer leur vie de façon claire, et le faire sans compromettre les systèmes de survie de la planète.

Au cours des prochains mois, ISF subira une réinitialisation de ses ambitions et de son orientation stratégique; garder ce qui fonctionne et évaluer ce qui pourrait mieux fonctionner tout en se concentrant d’avantage sur l’aspect «ingénierie» de notre nom, à la fois pragmatiquement et ouvertement.

Grâce à votre contribution, vos connaissances, votre expérience et votre soutien, nous continuerons à travailler à l’échange, au partage et à la libre circulation des pratiques et des solutions technologiques et d’ingénierie afin d’accroître le bien-être pour tous.
