The opportunity
This role involves routine bookkeeping activities in a progressive, non-profit organization. We are currently a $5 million organization, with an ambitious growth plan for the next 5 years. We receive revenue and pay for expenses using more than 40 bank accounts that must be reconciled from all of our chapters across Canada. Our volunteers and staff incur expenses in Canadian dollars, Ghanaian cedis, Malawian kwacha, and a foreign currencies.
This is a contract fulltime role [18 months] in an office with people who are deeply passionate, high energy and hard working. You’ll be working on a GREAT team with highly engaged, committed and supportive individuals.
You’ll work most closely with our Director of Finance. You’ll also have the chance to integrate into our dynamic and creative office environment, in which learning, commitment to personal growth and a sense of purpose are in huge supply. There will certainly be some busy times of the year in this role (particularly after our year-end on October 31), for which long hours may be required.
Specific responsibilities
- Prepare monthly bank reconciliations across roughly 40-45 bank accounts, including communication with our volunteer chapter leaders;
- Preparing periodic reconciliations for other accounts to ensure accuracy;
- Posting monthly credit card transactions and preparing reconciliations;
- Posting other monthly balance sheet account general journal entries and preparing these reconciliations;
- Maintaining the general ledger;
- Entering and issuing all invoices;
- Entering and paying all bills;
- Recording cash receipts and making deposits
- Applying administrative and financial controls;
- Maintaining an orderly filing system;
- Providing additional clerical and administrative support;
- Supporting and fostering a culture of service and gratitude across the organization;
- Improving business processes (we’re excited to hear where you might have skills and interests in this regard)
Who you are
- You are very detail oriented;
- You know your debits and credits;
- You either know QuickBooks or can demonstrate that you can learn it very quickly;
- You don’t need to be an Excel wizard, but it would be awesome if you are! At the very least, you should be able to structure/build spreadsheets and perform basic functions;
- You have the ability to–or at the least are excited by–increasing automation in our systems and seeking efficiency at every turn;
- You should have bookkeeping experience. We’re looking for someone who’s done this for a few years–unless you can figure out how to convince us that you can do the job otherwise;
- You have a university degree in accounting or a relevant field
- You are familiar with Canadian non-profit bookkeeping, or can learn it quickly;
- You can write and communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues and partners;
- Part of your work will be very independent. Part of it will be alongside other team members. You’re comfortable with both types of work;
- You are adaptable to change–ours is a fast-paced, constantly evolving work environment; and
- You’re willing to engage in some travel within Canada, e.g. for staff retreats, our annual national conference.
Compensation
Salary commensurate with experience. All employees are provided with a comprehensive health/dental benefit package and 3 weeks of vacation each year.
