Program Officer

Role: Program Officer; Mining Shared Value

Location: Remote

Engineers Without Borders Canada is seeking a well-rounded Program Officer with a strong analytical background to join our dynamic team at Mining Shared Value (MSV).

MSV is a program that works to improve the social and economic benefits of mining activity for host communities and countries by increasing local procurement by the global mining industry. We view mining as a leverage point in resource-rich economies to build local competencies and reduce dependency on the extractive sector. Our work involves systemic changes in the global and host country mining sectors to incentivize and support actors to work together in targeting opportunities for supplying goods and services to the sector. We have developed tools and standards, such as the Mining Local Procurement Reporting Mechanism (LPRM), to support transparency and sustainability in local procurement.

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Program Officer will work with various stakeholders, including mining companies, host country governments, civil society organizations, and supplier bodies.

This role will be responsible for

  • conducting research on company practices and supporting direct engagement with the sector;
  • analyzing government policies, and
  • advocating for best practices in mining local procurement.

While the situation can change based on specific project/program work, the successful candidate could be required to travel up to four to five times over a year.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., international development, economics, political science); graduate degree preferred or applicable work experience
  • Minimum two years of work experience in similar roles (e.g., think tanks, advocacy organizations, consulting firms)
  • Experience working with private and public sector procurement processes will be highly valued
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a remote work environment
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Fluent in English, Bilingualism in French and/or Spanish is an asset.

Eligibility:

  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or refugee status, legally able to work in Canada, OR
  • International candidates willing to work remotely will also be considered, depending on location and eligibility.

Duration of the position: One-year, fixed term contract with potential for extension
