Monica Rucki in Ghana

For the next ten months I will be working in Ghana on a rural energy project. Ghana is a country of 20 million situated in Western Africa, bordering the Gulf of Guinea, between Cote d'Ivoire and Togo.

In Ghana, I will be working with an organization called the Kumasi Institute of Technology and the Environment (KITE). KITE is a Ghanaian non-governmental organization specializing in environmentally sound technical solutions and related policy interventions for sustainable development.

With KITE I will be working on the Multifunctional Platform (MFP) Program which addresses the problem of rural energy poverty in Ghana by helping community groups or individuals acquire MFPs focusing on empowering women. The MFP is a diesel engine mounted on a chassis which powers a variety of end-use equipment such as grinding mills, de-huskers and battery chargers. In addition to MFP installation, the program includes business and management training, literacy training and operator training.
