KITE

KITE is a non-governmental organisation based in Ghana. KITE specializes in environmentally sound technical solutions for sustainable development.

KITE is currently focusing its energy and resources on the Multifunctional Platform Project. The multifunctional platform (MFP) is a 10hp diesel engine mounted on a chassis that powers a variety of end-use equipment such as grinding mills, de-huskers, battery chargers and water pumps. The engine can also generate electricity for lights, refrigeration and water pumps.

KITE is working with entrepreneurs, mainly women, to use the technology. The owner is able to sell its services, and those using the MFP benefit from reduced time spent on domestic tasks, time that can be used for additional productive tasks. The project is therefore providing more than electricity to rural communities in Ghana, it is also acting to empower women and provide them with income generating opportunities.

In the next three years, KITE plans to install MFPs in 50 communities. The success of this project will depend on their ability to work with local communities, transferring knowledge and skills to rural entrepreneurs.

EWB volunteers have been a part of KITE's MFP team for more than two years now, having sent four long-term and four short-term volunteers to work on the project. Currently Monica Rucki is working with KITE.
