National Conference 2010: EWBers inspired after four days in St. John’s

On Friday January 8, the 300 EWB members attending EWB’s National Conference in St. John's helped over 4,000 high school students in the city understand the importance of their daily actions for Africa. Exponential Change: Investing in the leaders who bring clean water to Malawi

Unlocking the potential of rural farmers in Ghana

The sun rises on another day in the rural community of Wiiga, Ghana. Farmers here eagerly begin to tend to their land to ensure their families will have enough to eat in the coming days. This is not uncommon across West and Southern Africa as most farmers are equipped to only farm for day-to-day survival, and not as an ongoing source of income. EWB has contributed to the innovative Agriculture as a Business program to help change this picture.

A Letter from Mike Kang in Malawi

Mike Kang has been overseas with Engineers Without Borders since November 2008 working to bring clean water access to rural communities across Malawi. Based in the capital city Lilongwe, he –with the rest of EWB’s Water team - has been building the skills and knowledge of our partners to help them improve access to safe sources of water in Malawi. Here, he is working to reduce the number of water points that do not work from 35% to 10% within five years. Support the work Mike is doing by setting up a World of Opportunity campaign page, and highlighting the importance of improving access to safe water for Malawi’s most vulnerable communities.

Sticky, Sweet and Sustainable: How honey farming is improving the lives of rural Zambians

Honey farming in Zambia is widespread, yet farmers in the rural community of Mwinilunga were struggling to earn an income. In 1997, Dan Ball saw a unique opportunity to change this. He started Forest Fruits, a honey aggregation and processing company that now works with almost 6,000 small-scale farmers in the community of Mwinilunga. EWB overseas volunteer Mark Hemsworth has been working with Forest Fruits since 2008, to improve and expand their capacity in response to the company’s rapid growth. Today, Forest Fruits has become a $1 million international business by unleashing the power of honey bee farmers in the region.

EWB has earned a reputation among many Canadian political elite as knowledgeable and committed change-makers. James Haga – our exciting new Director of Advocacy – is working to further expand this network of non-partisan political supporters, and promote more forward thinking aid policies in Canada. With the launch of Calling on Change, an EWB ‘how to’ site of political advocacy, EWBers across the board can now work alongside us to hold Canadian leaders accountable for their overseas development policies. With over 50 000 members, this cooperative exports cocoa around the world. This slideshow takes you from the farm to the processing and storage facilities where the huge amount of cocoa is processed and transported to international markets, including Canada.
